Description
Halfpenny Cottage is a detached house situated within a street row, originally comprising two dwellings. It dates back to the early 18th century, with some alterations occurring in the 19th century. The house is constructed from cut, squared limestone and has a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high with an attic, and may have a cellar to the right side, as the ground slopes away with the street.
The ground floor features two 2-light wooden casements, each sheltered by a 19th-century hood. There's also a 2-light recessed chamfer-mullion casement with a hood. The first floor has two 3-light recessed chamfer-mullion casements, all sharing a common hood mould, and a 3-light casement set within a gabled, flush dormer. Gable stacks are present.
A flank door is set within a chamfered surround and accessed by four steps between the second and third windows. A former doorway has been blocked between the first and second windows on the right return. This return also has a 3-light chamfer-mullion casement with a hood. A rear extension has been added. The left gable is plain. The name “TIBBIWELL VILLAS” is carved into the stonework.
