Description

Mill Place is a house dating from the early 19th century, with subsequent alterations and additions. The house is constructed of limestone ashlar, with a hipped slate roof supported by brackets, and ashlar stacks, one pair linked by an arch to the west. The sides and rear are rendered. The front facade has two storeys and three windows, all sash windows with thin glazing bars set within curved over-arches, and external shutters on the ground floor, except for the central first-floor window. A half-glazed door with side lights is set within a round-headed opening featuring a plain fanlight and keystone, and is sheltered by a Doric portico with a cornice and blocking course. A plinth runs along the base, rusticated on each side of the windows, with draped swag motifs above the ground-floor windows. A band course runs along the first-floor window cills.

The left return facade has three windows, with the central bay being smaller, and all having external shutters except for the two ground-floor windows on the left. Quoin strips are present, and there is a cellar light. A lower two-storey rear wing has a ground-floor 2-light casement with a segmental head and a door with overlight, two 9-pane sashes at the first floor, a parapet, and coping. The right return, which is without shutters, is similar to the left return, and also features a cellar light with a segmental head.

The rear of the house includes a single-storey, flat-roofed addition set at the angle with the rear wing, featuring a door and a 6-pane sash window on one side, a round-headed sash window with splayed glazing bars above, and a 4-pane light and a smaller sash window at ground floor level. The inner side of the rear wing has two 9-pane sashes on the first floor, ground floor two 2-light casements, and a larger 9-pane sash. The rear of the wing mirrors the front design with a similar first-floor sash window. The interior has not been inspected.
