Description
The bridge over the River Chew, located in Stanton Drew, is a structure that likely dates back to the 13th or 14th century, with repairs made in the 20th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble and dressed stone. The bridge spans approximately 12 meters and has a footway that is about 5 meters wide. There are parapet walls on each side, around one meter high, made of rubble with coping. Each side features two pointed arches with chamfered mouldings and a relieving arch, along with a central cutwater that has off-sets on either side and a pyramidal stone top. The inner ribs of the vaults are visible, and on the east side, there is an oval plaque with an illegible inscription and a strengthening element that includes an exposed steel girder. This bridge is also recognized as an ancient monument, designated as Avon number 162.
