Description
Splash Cottage is a former mill manager's house, now a residential property attached to Leonard Stanley House. It dates from the late 18th century and is constructed of coursed rubble limestone with brick additions. The building features ashlar chimneys and a stone slate roof, with pantiles on the outbuilding.
The cottage is two storeys high and has a double pile plan. The front elevation has two windows, with a flat mullioned three-light window on the right and a two-light window to the left above a doorway that has a stone lintel and an eight-panel door. A circular light has been inserted into the central upper floor.
On the north side, there are two gables, each with a gable-mounted chimney; the left chimney is made of ashlar with a moulded cap, while the right has been rebuilt in artificial stone. There is a two-storey brick addition to the left gable, which features a small Gothic casement window on the upper floor and a doorway below with a timber lintel and a plank door.
An attached brick outbuilding spans the mill leat on stone segmental arches and includes a Gothic window with intersecting glazing bars, along with 20th-century glazed doors to the right. The rear of the cottage has similar fenestration to the front, but the central doorway is blocked with a timber casement. The outbuilding has a large Gothic iron casement and two smaller 20th-century Gothic casements. Splash Cottage is part of a group with Leonard Stanley House and the mill workshop.
