Description

The Gatehouse at Bonds Mill is a late 19th-century pillbox-style building, constructed of reinforced concrete at ground floor level and red brick above. It is based on the Type-24 pillbox design, featuring an octagonal plan with a projecting porch facing south. A steel stairway with timber steps leads to a first-floor doorway, which incorporates a steel grille. The exterior brickwork is notable for uncut bricks projecting in a cogged pattern at each corner. A fixed steel ladder provides access to a roof hatchway. A flat concrete roof houses a former gun emplacement, showing evidence of removed fittings, and is enclosed by steel railings. Originally, there were three embrasures with concrete lintels; eight later window openings have been added, with the upper ones featuring concrete architraves and clay tile sills. The windows are fitted with white, powder-coated frames in a Crittal-style design. The interior has modern finishes to the floors, ceilings and walls, and lacks any historic fittings. Internal steel bars are present to the windows. The exterior also includes modern signage, furniture, and CCTV cameras.
