Barnard And Unidentified Monument, About 15M North Of North Door To East Of Path, In Churchyard Of Church Of St Mary The Virgin

The Barnard and an unidentified monument are located about 15 meters north of the north door and to the east of the path in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Frampton-on-Severn. The two chest tombs date from the mid to late 18th century. The northern tomb is unidentified and features a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping on its base. Its sides have moulded rectangular panels with flanking relief strips, and the ends are adorned with cartouches. The southern tomb belongs to John Barnard, dated 1796, and is nearly square with a pyramidal cap. It has a moulded plinth and capping, a fluted frieze with a spiral astragal, and indented corners. Three sides display raised ovals with draped leaf relief, while the west side features a relief of a tree and a pyramid with drapery. The site was partially overgrown at the time of the survey in December 1985.
