Description
The Old Police Station, located at No. 2 Bradley Street in Wotton-under-Edge, is a dwelling that was previously a police station and a public house. It dates from the late 18th century, with a significant courtroom extension added in the late 19th century. The building features a rendered and ashlared exterior with rusticated quoins and a concrete tile roof.
The facade facing High Street is three stories high with two wide-spaced sash windows that have glazing bars. There is a centrally located blind panel with a moulded edge on the first floor. Additionally, there are two small window slits on the left side of the return. The entrance has a six-panel false door with a radial fanlight, framed by an Ionic three-quarter column doorcase topped with an open pediment.
On the Bradley Street side, the building is also three stories tall and has three sash windows with glazing bars. The entrance features a six-panel flush door beneath a five-light rectangular fanlight. The large courtroom extension is constructed from squared and snecked dressed stone with a slate roof, and it includes two blind openings and one large sash window with bars on the first floor, along with two small sashes on the ground floor. This building is significant in the streetscape, serving as a visual stop on the main street looking west, and it contributes to the group value of the surrounding area, which includes Haw Street to the west.
