Description
Melrose House is an 18th-century dwelling and shop located in Long Street, Wotton-under-Edge. It is a double-banked building with a central valley roof and a rear projection, featuring a gable stack. The exterior is primarily smooth render, with alternating stone quoins, a deep coved cornice, and a Welsh slate front slope, with some tile to one internal slope. The building has two storeys and originally three sash windows without bars. A late 19th-century shop front is located on the left side. The main entrance features a good 18th-century stone door surround with three-quarter columns and an open pediment; it has a six-panel door and a plain glass fanlight. Inside, there is a staircase and a window on the return wall to Clarence Road, with "Gothick" detailing. A small enclosed area surrounds the front door, enclosed by spear-head iron railings approximately 3 feet high, and a pair of gates. The facade was likely rebuilt at some stage, as evidenced by a straight joint on the flank wall.
