Description
The National Westminster Bank, formerly known as No. 10 National Provincial Bank, is a mid-18th century building located on High Street in Wotton-under-Edge. Originally a dwelling, it features rendered ashlar with painted stone rusticated quoins and a cornice adorned with modillions. The structure has a stone plinth and a front slope covered with stone slate, while the reverse slope and wing are finished with plain concrete tiles.
This lofty and broad building stands three storeys tall, plus a basement, and has a distinctive wide reverse roof slope with a large projecting wing that is steeply roofed. The façade includes three windows arranged in a three-one-three pattern, with fluted pilasters. The top floor windows have square heads, while the middle and bottom floors feature Venetian-style outer windows, with a small projecting key on the central first-floor arched window. All windows are set in wood surrounds and detail at the wall face, and the sashes do not have bars.
Access to the bank is via a door located up four stone steps, where the bottom two risers project in a segment of a circle. The entrance features a new eight-panel door with a rectangular fanlight that has complex bar tracery, topped by a segmental pediment with a pulvinated frieze supported on scroll brackets, all in painted stone.
While the ground floor interior details are obscured by bank fittings, the windows retain their internal painted shutters. The building also boasts a good bifurcated 19th-century staircase and several 18th-century panelled rooms, particularly in the back wing.
