Description
The gatehouse to the west of Berkeley Castle is an outer structure dating from the 14th century. It is constructed from pink and grey Severn sandstone, laid in random courses and featuring an embattled design. The west side has a triple moulded wide pointed archway with an inset arch top, and there are remains of carved animal capitals on this side. To the left, there are shaped timber double doors with a porte-cochere and vertical applied battens. The inner arch to the east is simpler, also featuring a triple-moulded archway. Additionally, there is a small room in the south wall that includes a leaded window facing east.
