Description
The former gatehouse to the north at Berkeley Castle, along with the adjoining wall to the east and a free-standing wall to the west, dates back to the 14th century. It is constructed from pink and grey Severn sandstone, with coursed walls and dressed stone used for the arches of the gatehouse. The gatehouse is a small square structure featuring a double moulded wide pointed archway on both the north and south sides, topped with four castellations. There is no remaining roof. The attached wall varies in height from about 4 to 6.5 meters, and the total width from west to east is approximately 150 meters. The wall is embattled to the west, steps down as it attaches to the gatehouse, and is also embattled at the far east.
