Description

This listing describes a row of three chest tombs located about 5 meters south-west of the south-west corner of the nave in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary the Virgin in Berkeley. The central tomb is dedicated to Ralph Pearce, who died in 1742, while the two end tombs date from the late 18th century to early 19th century.

All three tombs are made of limestone. The first tomb, located to the north, features a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping on the base, gadrooned quarter balusters, and rectangular end panels that have rounded projections at the top and bottom. The side inscription panels are plain, but the tomb is eroded and the top is askew.

The second tomb is dedicated to Ralph Pearce and Mary Pearce, who died in 1746. It also has a flat top, moulded plinth and capping on the base, and flattened lyre ends. The south side has a plain rectangular inscription panel, while the north side features a large oval panel decorated with a swag.

The third tomb, located to the south, has a tent top with a moulded plinth and capping on the base, quarter baluster corners, and panels similar to the first tomb.
