Description
Somerset Lodge is an inner park gatehouse located on the east approach to Cholmondeley Castle. It was built in the early 19th century, likely for the first Marquis of Cholmondeley. The structure is made of hammer-dressed sandstone and features a lead roof. It stands two storeys tall and has three bays. The central bay contains a large carriageway opening that is slightly set forward and features full height multi-panelled openwork gates. This opening is flanked by sash windows with "Y" tracery glazing bars in lancet openings, and smaller lancet casements are present on the ground floor only. Above the carriage arch is a shield bearing arms and a crown. The outer bays have a moulded cornice and a crenellated parapet, while the centre bay's parapet is supported on a corbel table to give the appearance of a tower. The east and west faces of the gatehouse are similar in design, and there are gable end stacks. The gatehouse is flanked by crenellated wing walls that conceal single-storey brick and stone outbuildings. Inside the arch, there is a plastered quadripartite vaulted ceiling and Tudor-headed doors on the north and south sides, featuring a lock rail and five vertical panels above and below.
