Description
The gated entrance to Temple Gardens, located on the north side and dating from around 1695, is possibly designed by Jean Tijou. The structure features wrought iron work with a stone surround, likely from the early 19th century. It consists of two full and two half unfluted columns topped with unorthodox Corinthian capitals and a plain entablature. The half columns are flanked by short sections of tooled sandstone walling with a projecting plinth. The two outer openings, formed by the columns, are filled with wrought iron screens that incorporate round rods, scrolls, spears, and leaves. The matching gate is mounted on built-up metal piers with zigzag infilling and is topped with a flat overthrow adorned with spears. This description was noted by Gervase Jackson-Stops in Country Life on July 19, 1973.
