Description

Scotch Farm, built in 1887, primarily served as stables and is located in Cholmondeley Park. The building is constructed of red brick in English Garden Wall Bond and features red tile and asbestos cement roofs. It has a mainly two-storey, nine-bay facade with twelve-bay returns, arranged in a quadrangle plan.

The main entrance includes a large pair of multi-panelled and studded softwood doors on strap hinges, set within a semi-circular stone arched carriage opening. Above this opening is an incised stone panel displaying the Cholmondeley Arms and the date, topped by a two-light mullion window with leaded glazing. The entrance is flanked by octagonal stone-dressed towers with pyramid tiled roofs and ball finials.

The south facade features a stone plinth, stone window heads, first-floor sill bands, and steeply weathered sills. It has a mix of one-to-three-light casements and pivot lights with terra-cotta jambs and mullions. A stone eaves cornice adorns the two-storey gatehouse, which has a steep hipped tile roof and is topped by a bell turret with a weather vane. The end bays of the facade are set forward and contain three-light brick mullion windows with stone transoms, as well as large bullseye windows in stone frames.

Inside the quadrangle, the windows are metal casements with steeply weathered stone cills. The ground floor windows feature head bands, while the first-floor windows have sill bands. The large door openings are designed with Tudor arches, and the roofs are covered with asbestos-cement sheets.
