Description
The gatehouse located 35 meters to the west of the Castle Keep dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It is constructed of coursed rubble with freestone dressings and features hipped slate roofs that are concealed behind plain and embattled parapets. The building has two storeys.
On the west elevation, there is a central, heavily moulded, four-centred archway that includes a portcullis groove. This archway is flanked by large studded plank doors with strap hinges and a wicket door. Square buttresses, dating from the 18th to 19th centuries, with embattled tops and an embattled parapet on moulded corbels, are positioned on either side of the archway. The right-hand buttress partially obscures a single light window that has a double chamfered surround.
The east elevation features two-light casement windows set in double chamfered surrounds across three stages. The buttresses with off-sets flank the archway, which has a two-bay tierceron vault supported by clustered triple shafts with enriched capitals. The vault is adorned with carved bosses depicting foliage, arms, Tudor roses, and heads. Additionally, the north wall has two segmental-headed openings.
