Lower Court And Lower Court Cottage

Two attached houses, dating from the mid-to-late 17th century, are located on the south side of Selsey Road, North Woodchester. Originally listed as numbers 1 to 3 Lower Court Cottages, they are built of random and coursed rubble limestone with brick and concrete rebuilt chimneys and a stone slate roof to the main house, and plain tiles to Lower Court Cottage. The houses are two storeys with an attic and are arranged in an L-shape. Part of the south end of Lower Court Cottage is built into the adjacent building, Ferndale.

The north side features two gables with a two-window arrangement on the upper floor and attic. The ground floor has paired casements on the left, and a combined hoodmould and casement with a timber lintel to the right. All windows were formerly two-light chamfered mullioned casements, although those in the left gable have had their mullions removed. The west side also has two gables with scattered two-light and former two-light casements, with a four-light casement on the ground floor of the left gable. An off-centre doorway has a plank door to the right gable. The east side has a projecting gable end to the main house. Lower Court Cottage has two gables on the left side with 19th-century timber casements, often in what were previously mullioned openings. The southern portion of Lower Court Cottage runs back to the ridge only.

Internally, original fireplaces and the roof structure survive in the main house. The interiors were restored by the Period Cottage Improvement Society. The houses form part of a group with Knapp House and Ferndale.
