Description

Two houses, Ferndale Cottage and Rose Cottage, likely date from the late 17th or 18th century. They are built of roughcast stone with a slate roof. Ferndale Cottage is two bays wide, while Rose Cottage is three bays wide. Ferndale Cottage has a casement window on the ground floor, with a small window alongside it. The first floor has sash windows with vertical glazing bars. A half-glazed door provides access. Rose Cottage features a six-light wooden mullioned window on the ground floor of the first bay, alongside a small window to the left. A casement window is in the third bay. The first floor has a three-light and a four-light wooden chamfered-mullion window, plus a casement window. A gabled timber porch, with wide boards and strap hinges, shelters the entrance. The building has gable-end stacks, including a squat cross-axial stack. A gabled wing extends from the rear, including a re-entrant stair wing under a catslide roof to the left, and a 20th-century extension. The rear of Ferndale Cottage has a two-light window. The interior of Rose Cottage retains some wide-boarded doors, a stone fireplace, chamfered beams, and first-floor stud and plaster partitions. The interior of Ferndale Cottage was not inspected, but it is believed to contain an upper cruck truss.
