Description
Pennington Lodge Tower is a monument dedicated to the naval victories of the Napoleonic War, built in 1799 for James King of Finsthwaite House. The tower is constructed from coursed slate and features a square, two-stage design. There is a projecting course between the stages and at the top, which is finished with an embattled parapet. Each face of the tower has two slots at each stage. The south face includes a blocked pointed entrance, while the second stage has an oval plaque that reads: "ERECTED TO HONOUR THE OFFICERS, SEAMEN AND MARINES OF THE ROYAL NAVY WHOSE MATCHLESS CONDUCT, AND IRRESISTIBLE VALOUR, DECISIVELY DEFEATED THE FLEETS OF FRANCE, SPAIN, AND HOLLAND AND PRESERVED AND PROTECTED LIBERTY AND COMMERCE 1799." The other faces of the tower have round openings at the second stage.
