Description

The Firs is a large house dating from c1830, situated at the end of a row. The exterior is roughcast rendered with ashlar dressings and rebuilt ashlar chimneys, topped by a Welsh slate roof with stone slate to the rear wing. It is three storeys high, with a central entrance plan, two rooms on each floor, a rear outshut, and a short two-storey rear wing. An attached row of houses is not considered to be of special interest. The front elevation has a three-window arrangement, all with plain raised architraves. The ground floor windows have plate glass sashes, the middle floor windows have 12 panes, and the upper floor windows have 6 panes. A central round arched doorway has plain architraves, a six-panel door, a fanlight, and a C19 glazed conservatory porch. A hipped roof is present. A brick screen wall is attached to the left. An upper floor sash window on the south side features an iron balcony. The north side has a wing with a doorway featuring double three-panel doors flanked by small fixed lights under a combined timber lintel; decorative glazing bars are present over the door, along with a 16-pane sash window to the upper floor. The rear of the house has two eaves-mounted chimneys and a small square lantern to the outshut. The basic early C19 plan of the interior survives, but the staircase dates from c1900, as does a single mullioned window. There is also evidence of heightening to the rear outshut. Original joinery is present in the hall. While fireplaces on the ground floor have been replaced (one c1900, one original to the right), an original stick baluster staircase rises to the attic floor. The building closes the view upon ascent of the first part of Selsley Road.
