Description

Two Winchcombe Monuments are located about 6 meters south of the south porch in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin. These are two chest tombs. The northern tomb is dedicated to Henry Winchcombe, who died in 1723, while the southern tomb commemorates another member of the Winchcombe family, who died in 1766. Both tombs are made of limestone and feature flat tops with moulded plinths and capping, set on a very large base. The northern tomb has plain recessed side panels, a shield on the east end, and an urn with drapery on the west end. The southern tomb has gadrooned quarter baluster corners and bellied panels on the ends and sides, all surrounded by high relief carving.
