Description

The Wick and Unidentified Monument, located about 3 meters south of the south aisle in the churchyard of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, is a Grade II listed chest tomb for William Wick, dated 1769, and a pedestal tomb of unidentified origin from the late 18th century. Both monuments are made of limestone.

The chest tomb for Wick features a flat top with a moulded plinth and capping on a base, and it has indented corners. The ends of this tomb are adorned with egg and dart moulding beneath the capping, while the east end is plain and the west end displays a shield relief. The north side was very overgrown at the time of the survey in December 1985, and the south side includes a circular panel set within a moulded eared square panel.

The pedestal tomb to the east has a stepped cap with a curved chamfered top and a pyramidal finial, which originally had a pineapple on top, but this has been removed. It also features a moulded plinth and capping with indented corners, a fluted frieze with carved ears of corn between the flutes, recessed ovals at the ends, and circles on the sides with carved surrounds. This monument was also very overgrown during the survey. Each tomb is set on a broad stone platform.
