Description

This former barn, now used as a showroom and offices for a glassworks, dates back to 1695, as indicated by a datestone. It features Flemish bond brickwork, with a purply hue at the main door head level and a reddish tone above. The barn has a slate roof and consists of five bays. There is a plain brick plinth and a central doorway that originally had double doors below the eaves, with a brick-on-edge timber lintel and faced ship-lap boarding. The doorway has been infilled with a sill wall and a 5-light mullion and transom window. On each side of the barn, there are three infilled slit air vents at low level, along with a plain string course, with two additional string courses above. The wall has been heightened with differently colored brick above the door head level, and the datestone is positioned over the door.

On the right return, there are two mid-20th century windows under a concrete lintel, with a plinth and string course matching the front. Above these, there are two slit vents, and in the gable, there are three and two more slit vents with a further plain string course between them, along with an oval owl hole in the apex of the gable. Internally, there are inserted floors and partitions from the late 20th century, with angle-strut trusses, two of which have collars, and wind braces extending from the purlin to the wallplate. The air vents below the main door head have splayed reveals internally, while those above do not widen. The building was used as a Plymouth Brethren Meeting Room for several years.
