Description

This is a three-bay barn, originally built in the late 17th century and extended to the south in the early 18th century. The barn is constructed of brick with a thatched roof. A flint plinth runs along the base. The original 17th-century section displays a brick bond pattern of two rows of stretchers followed by one row of Flemish bond. The barn has one storey and features two full-height double doors. Three narrow ventilation lights are located on the east-facing wall, one to the left of the left door and two to the right of the right door. The eaves are constructed of mud and studwork. The gabled roof has kneelers at the gable heads. A clasping buttress is visible at the south-west corner. The south gable head shows signs of crumbling and contains three ventilation slits and an owl hole. Outshuts partially conceal the east face of the barn. The interior ventilation slits are splayed. The roof structure consists of tie beams, arched braces (many now missing), principals with collars, and two tiers of butt purlins. Straight wind bracing is positioned between the purlins, and secondary rafters are pegged into the purlins. The barn was formerly part of Church Farm, the farmhouse of which is not listed.
