Description

The Cadle monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 17 meters north-north-east of the north-east corner of the tower of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Westbury-on-Severn. It commemorates Elizabeth Cadle, who died in 1853, and is made of stone. The tomb features a square dome above a thin gadrooning, cavetto moulding, roll, and step, all resting on a flat lid with a moulded edge. The lid and step have indented corners, as does the main body below. The monument includes a fluted frieze. The south face displays a large raised oval surrounded by tendrils and flowers within a narrow margin, while the north face has a plain oval. The west face features an oval with a projecting leaf wreath around the top two-thirds, and the east face has a plain oval formed by a recessed line. There is some weathering present. The east face also records the names of children who died between 1832 and 1855. This monument is part of a group of Cadle monuments, with four others listed.
