Description

The Bennett monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, approximately 2 meters east of the north gate leading to Bell Lane. This early 19th-century tomb is constructed from ashlar stone and features a plain lid with a moulded edge. At each corner, there are rectangular reeded pilasters that frame a raised rectangular panel, which also has a moulded edge and scalloped corners on the long sides, with anthemia in the corners. The ends of the tomb are similar but include a raised circular panel. The plinth has a moulded top that projects forward for the pilasters. The monument bears inscriptions for members of the Bennett family, dating from 1816 to 1844, with some inscriptions located on the lid. The lettering is well executed, featuring Gothic lettering in the first line of the 1824 inscription and some italic lettering. The design of this monument is similar to that of the adjoining monument to Major General Richard Legge.
