Description
The cast iron road marker, dating from around 1900, is located on the east end of Owl's Barn Cottage, near the junction with Barn Lane in Drybrook, Ruardean Woodside. This marker features a semi-circular head that is approximately 600 mm across, with a raised margin and lettering. The inscription reads: 'VR THIS ROAD FOR THE DISTANCE OF 2675 YARDS (arrow points to left) WAS MADE AT THE EXPENSE OF THE CROWN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE INHABITANTS AND DISTRICT 1899 - 1900 E. STAFFORD HOWARD ESQ COMMISSIONER PHILIP BAYLIS ESQ DEP SURVEYOR'. This is a very unusual marker and is the only one in the parish, while there are four similar markers located in the nearby parish of Cinderford.
