Description
The United Reformed Church, originally a Congregational Chapel, was built in 1858 and enlarged in 1872. It features well squared stone with ashlar dressings on the front, while the rear sides are made of roughly squared rubble with ashlar dressings, and the rear extension is constructed of brick in English bond. The building has a slate roof and is designed in a galleried T-plan with a wide rear extension, situated on a slope from the road.
The stem of the T projects towards the road and is gabled, with Tuscan pilasters at the corners. It has a moulded gable parapet that returns at the foot as a cornice to the pilasters, topped with an acroterion at the apex. The gable features three round-headed windows, with the center window positioned higher than the side ones, and below this is a datestone and a square window. The design includes ovolo moulding, and the cornice to the pilasters serves as the springing for the side window heads, with lower sills extended as a plain string course. The windows have cast iron frames with marginal lights, and there is an original panelled door on the left return.
At the top of the T, there is one round-headed window on each side, with a plain arris and a projecting keystone, and the gable copings are plain with projecting kneelers. Inside, there are three galleries, including an organ gallery in the center of the back extension. The gallery fronts are made of both cast iron and timber, while the pulpit front is cast iron. The lower walls are faced with vertical boarding, and the lower pews have panelled ends with low doors; alternate pews feature holes in the bookrests for individual communion cups. The crosspiece of the T is the original 1858 chapel, while the stem and likely the rear extension date from 1872.
