Description

This is a barn located near Great Marstow Farm, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from random rubble that has been brought to courses, with ashlar quoins around the doors. The barn features weatherboarding above the doors and a corrugated-iron roof. It has five bays with a central threshing floor and porches on each side. The porches are the same height as the barn and have double boarded doors with a cambered timber lintel positioned below the eaves level. Above the doors, there is weatherboarded timber framing that forms a gable, which now has a corrugated-iron covering on one side.

Each porch has a single slit air vent, while the barn itself has two rows of three slits for ventilation on either side of the porch. The gable also features two rows of three slits, along with a pitching hole that has a cambered brick arch and a trefoil owl-hole carved from a single stone at the apex of the gable. There are lean-to additions on one side that are either missing or in a ruinous condition. Inside, the threshing floor is stone-paved and has been lowered by 450mm. The walls are roughly plastered and show signs of deterioration, with bounding timbers visible on the sides. The barn has tie-beam trusses with angle struts and a diamond ridge piece. The porches were originally lofted above the doorhead level, with joists surviving on one side while they are missing on the other.
