Description

The Hermitage is a folly built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a hipped stone tiled roof. The structure includes a tall section of a "ruined" wall with a square plan chapel at the rear. The design is in the Gothic style, featuring two rows of three Early English style pointed arched lights with roll moulded edges. Additionally, there is a semi-circular headed Norman style window with lattice leaded glazing on the sides of the chapel at the rear. The Hermitage was built as an eye-catcher from Courtfield and was presumably also visible from the river and main road, enhancing the picturesque setting of the house.
