Description
The Chapel of St Mary, built around 1870, is located next to Courtfield in Welsh Bicknor. It is constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof. The chapel has a rectangular plan divided into three bays, with a link to the south that connects to the house. The entrance is through a west doorway, and the building is designed in the Early English style.
On the north side, there are three pairs of trefoil-headed lights, while the west gable end showcases a curved-sided triangular window with three quatrefoiled roundels above and two similar trefoil-headed lights below. The chapel is supported by stepped diagonal buttresses and has an east bellcote. Inside, there is fine early 20th-century stained glass created by Heston, Butler and Bayne from London. The crypt contains memorials to the Vaughan family, including earlier memorials that were relocated from St Margarets.
