Description
Oakdale House is an early 18th-century farmhouse that has been altered in the early and mid-19th century. It is constructed with Flemish-bond brickwork on an ashlar plinth, and has a tiled roof. The front of the house has three windows and is three rooms deep, with two storeys and attics. The front door is made up of nine panels and is accessed via four semicircular stone steps. It has panelled reveals, a plain architrave, a three-pane rectangular fanlight, and a slight open pediment over the top; the outline of a former curved hood is visible in the brickwork. Each side of the front door is a four-pane wide sash window; these have stone sills and rubbed brick flat arches, with the centre of each arch forming a “keystone”. The first floor has three similar windows, with the centre two windows being two-pane sashes. There are moulded brick eaves, and changes to brick-on-edge dentil on the right return. The roof is hipped, with a well in front of the two-room part. A separate hipped roof sits behind, with three gabled dormers featuring two-pane sashes and moulded bargeboards. Chimneys are situated within the building envelope on the left and right. A single-room deep projecting wing is located at the rear of the left return, originally part single storey and raised in the 19th century. Inside, there is an elliptical arch with a fluted keystone to the opening at the rear of the entrance hall. The staircase has turned balusters, a swept handrail, and a cut string, although some parts may be remade using original features. The house forms a group with two other buildings formerly connected with an iron works.
