Description

This is a late 18th-century house and shop situated in a row along Newent High Street. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brickwork, with a stone plinth on the right-hand side. It has a tiled roof. The facade is six windows wide and extends over two storeys and attics.

On the left-hand side of the building is a shop front dating from 1984. To the right of the shop front is a double boarded door leading to a carriageway, featuring timber door posts set on stone heel blocks, alongside a wicket gate. A steeply cambered brick archway is present above the carriageway door. A three-light mullion and transom window is situated to the right, with a steep segmental brick head and iron opening casement. A six-fielded panel front door, approached by three stone steps, has a moulded timber surround and consoles supporting a pediment, with a frieze of paterae below. Adjacent to the door is a further window matching the mullion and transom style.

The first floor features two windows dating from 1984 on the left-hand side, beneath cambered brick arches. The original opening on the right-hand side extended down to the shop window head. A two-light casement window sits above the carriageway, also with a cambered brick arch. Further windows on the right reflect those on the ground floor, with a smaller blind opening above the front door. The eaves are finished with brick-on-edge dentil details. There are three gabled dormers, each containing a two-light casement window; two of these dormers are located on the right, each with iron opening lights. A brick chimney is visible on the left-hand gable.
