Description
This large double barn, located approximately 50 meters north of Barrington Downs Farmhouse, dates from the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed from limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins and features a stone slate roof. The barn has a long rectangular plan with a three-bay extension on the left gable end. On the south side, there are two projecting porches, with lean-tos on either side and between them. Each porch has low double doorways with timber lintels. The right-hand porch is two storeys high and includes a single-light window on the first floor, along with a slit-like access to a pigeon loft that has two stone slate landing platforms above. There are single-width doorways leading to the lean-tos, and on the north side, there are two segmental-headed double doorways and a blocked pitching window, as well as triangular ventilation holes. The extension on the left gable end features a central flat-chamfered doorway flanked by single lights, and flat coping is present at the gable ends of both the barn and the extension.
Inside, the barn has a two-storey porch and three bays supported by collar and tie beam trusses, with some timbers replaced in the 20th century. The pigeon loft is lined with pigeon holes, and there is a low double-width doorway in the wall that divides the two halves of the barn. An adjoining barn has five bays with original collar and tie beam trusses.
