Description
The gate piers and flanking wall to Barrington Park Estate were built in the 18th century and are reputedly designed by William Kent. Made of ashlar, the entrance features a pair of large rectangular piers approximately 4 meters high, set back from the road. These piers are flanked by quadrant walls that are about 2 meters high and curve outward toward the road, creating an overall entrance width of around 30 meters. The lower two-thirds of each pier is made from flat-chamfered rusticated ashlar blocks, separated from the upper third by a band. The upper section is adorned with single swags on the north and south sides and foliate bosses within moulded oval margins on the other two sides, topped with triangular pediments. The flanking walls have flat coping and end at small piers, which were obscured by foliage during the last survey in June 1986. The wall slopes downwards to the right and left of each of these piers.
