Description
Downs Barn and the adjoining farm buildings are a late 18th-century structure consisting of a barn and open-fronted outbuildings. The buildings are made of coursed squared and dressed limestone with dressed quoins, and they have a stone slate roof. The barn has a rectangular plan with a projecting porch located off-centre to the right on the south side, which is flanked by lean-to extensions. An open-fronted store extends forward from the lean-to to the left of the porch. There is a loose box and another open-fronted store at the gable end of the lean-to to the right of the porch.
The central two-storey gabled porch on the south side features an unglazed two-light window in the gable. The wall opposite the porch has a double doorway and a pitching window. A pitching window is also located on the west gable end. To the left of the projecting porch, there is a four-bay open-fronted store with timber uprights dividing the bays, which projects forward. To the right, there is a loose box and another four-bay open-fronted store, also with timber uprights, extending away to the right.
Inside, the barn consists of four bays with original roof trusses featuring tie beams and raking struts, along with double staggered purlins. It is noted that there has been considerable loss of roof slating to the main barn as of June 1986.
