Description
Downs Cottages are a pair of semi-detached cottages built in the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone. At the time of resurvey in June 1986, the former stone slate roof had collapsed. The cottages feature ashlar stacks and have a rectangular plan with a later lean-to extension at the rear. They are two storeys high with a symmetrical façade that has five windows. The windows are two-light, lancet-headed stone-mullioned casements with carved spandrels and stopped hoods. There is a central 19th-century plank door set within a flat-chamfered 'Tudor'-arched surround. A wash-house extension is located at the rear, and there is an axial stack with capping and skirting. Inside, some 18th-century panelling has been reused at the bottom of the stairs in the left-hand cottage.
