Description
Upper Hilcot Farm is a detached farmhouse dating from the 15th to 16th centuries, with 20th-century additions. The front features close-studded timber framing on the ground floor and square-panelled timber framing on the first floor above, while the apex of the right gable end is pebble-dashed. The rear wall is constructed of coursed roughly squared limestone. To the left of the timber-framed range, there is a single bay that is also pebble-dashed. The roof is made of stone slate at the front and concrete tiles at the rear. The building has a 'T'-shaped plan with a 20th-century extension on the left gable end, and additional 20th-century extensions at the rear that are not of special interest. The main body of the farmhouse is two storeys tall with an attic, which is lit by four 20th-century two-light roof dormers featuring steel casements with glazing bars. The facade has four windows, mostly 20th-century casements with glazing bars that respect the timber-framing. Below the first-floor windows of the timber-framed section, there are moulded brackets, one of which has a carved lion's head. There is a double-chamfered stone-mullioned window with a stopped hood, now partially obscured in the stone gable at the rear. Access to the farmhouse is now via the 20th-century extension at the rear. The gable end has stepped coping. The interior has not been inspected. This farmhouse is a rare example of timber-framing in an area where stone construction is more common.
