Description
Cold Comfort is a former inn that has been converted into a house. It dates from the early 17th century, with later additions from the late 18th century and mid 19th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, topped with a stone slate roof and features stone stacks. It has an 'L'-shaped core with a 19th-century extension at the angle. There are 20th-century extensions at the gable ends and a 20th-century lean-to porch, which are not considered of special interest.
The main part of the building is two storeys high with an attic, which is illuminated by a 20th-century raking dormer at the rear. The east and south-facing walls contain two and three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements with glazing bars. There is a single light window on the left-hand wall that formerly lit a spiral staircase, and a relieving arch over a three-light window to the left of this single light. The front elevation features 20th-century single and three-light casements with glazing bars. A late 18th-century to mid 19th-century two-storey canted bay made of finely dressed stone is present on the gable end facing the road, which is lit by 20th-century sixteen-pane casements. The building has axial and projecting gable-end stacks.
Inside, there is a beam with a moulded soffit in the room with the canted bay.
