Description

The barn adjoining Empshill Farmhouse dates from the mid to late 18th century and includes later extensions. It is constructed from limestone rubble with dressed stone quoins and features a stone slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a projecting porch on the east side. Originally, it was an open-fronted store with a loft above to the right. The open-fronted store extends to the rear right. There is a double-doored entrance to the barn located off-centre to the left, with a gabled porch on the opposite wall. To the right, there are two ventilation slits with dressed stone surrounds.

Inside the barn, there are four bays featuring original collar and tie beam trusses with staggered purlins. A ramped walkway leads up to a plank door that accesses the loft above the former open-fronted store to the right. The ground floor previously consisted of two open bays with timber lintels, which are now blocked, along with a doorway and a casement window inserted in the blocking. There is also a plank door with a slatted upper half on the left side. The single-storey open-fronted store, which has open-fronted bays divided by square ashlar columns, extends to the rear right. A pointed finial is located at the right gable end of the formerly open-fronted store adjoining the barn. This building is an important part of a farm group.
