Description

This milestone, located at the National Grid Reference SP 027 034, is likely from the early 19th century, with a later cast-iron plate added after 1862. Made of limestone, the stone stands approximately 0.6 meters high and features a segmental-headed plate with a relief inscription that reads "CIRENR DISTRICT CIRENR 1." The current plate was installed following the 1862 Act that established the Cirencester District of Roads, which took over from the Cirencester Turnpike Trust that had been in place since 1825. Notably, the stone does not appear on the Ordnance Survey's first edition Preliminary Drawing map from 1816.
