Description

This milestone, located at the National Grid Reference SP 015 034, is likely from the mid-18th century. It is made of limestone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone stands about 0.5 meters high and has a rectangular plate with the relief inscription "CIRENR 1 GLOSTER 16." The route it marks was originally turnpiked in 1747 and was transferred to the Cirencester Turnpike Trust in 1825. The milestone is also indicated on the Ordnance Survey's first edition Preliminary Drawing map from 1816.
