Description

This is a milestone, possibly from the mid-18th century, located in Cirencester. It is made of limestone and features a cast-iron plate. The stone stands approximately 0.5 meters high and has a segmental arched top. The plate also has a segmental arch at the top center, with relief lettering that reads: "1/ To CIRENCESTER/ IX/ To TETBURY/ XXXII/ To BATH." The road was turnpiked in 1743, as noted in the legislation of that year, and the stone and plate are likely from the same period. The milestone is marked on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1816.
