Description
Milestone located in Cirencester, possibly from the mid-18th century, with a plate that post-dates the 1862 Act which established the Cirencester District of Roads. The milestone is made of limestone and stands approximately 0.6 meters high, featuring a segmental arched top. It has a cast-iron plate with a segmental arched top and relief lettering that reads "CIRENR DISTRICT CIRENR 1". The road it marks was originally turnpiked in 1727 under the Cirencester - St Johns Bridge Trust and was managed by the Cirencester Turnpike Trust from 1825, later becoming part of the Cirencester District of Roads in 1862. This milestone is not shown on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map from 1816.
