Description
The Stratton War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected between 1919 and 1921, with additional names added after the Second World War. The architect is unknown.
Carved from limestone, the memorial is designed in the form of a Cavalry Cross and is situated within Stratton Cemetery. At the top, it features a square lantern with a pitched roof, which has a Calvary Cross depicting Christ carved into its front side. This lantern rests on a simple square capital, supported by a tapered octagonal column shaft. Below this is a low octagonal plinth with a three-stepped square base. The plinth and the upper two steps display inscriptions in incised and painted lettering:
On the east face, it reads: "R.I.P. / TO THE MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF STRATTON WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT EUROPEAN WAR / 1914 - 1919 / (NAMES)."
On the north face, it states: "1939 – 1945 / (NAMES)."
