Description
Harnhill Mill House is an attached house to Harnhill Mill, located on the north side of the A417 in Driffield. The building dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century and is constructed of coursed rubble stone with quoins, featuring a mostly stone slate roof, with some slate and scattered brick stacks. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a three-storey projecting gable on the left side.
The main part of the house includes three 12-pane sash windows on the first floor and two on the ground floor, along with a central projecting gabled stone porch. The mill, situated directly behind the house, rises three storeys high. It has three window and door openings on each floor of the section immediately behind the house, all featuring cambered flush stone lintels with keystones.
The mill includes iron 16-pane fixed lights flanking a central door with a hatch on the first floor, a blind window above, and a projecting corrugated iron hauling gantry above that. A wing at the back of the mill projects forward as a wide gable, containing one 9-pane light on each floor and an arch for the mill waters below. The interior is supported by cast iron columns, and although the main part of the interior is not accessible, it is reputed to have much of the mill machinery remaining in situ. Notably, a large iron wheel is still present on the wide projecting gable at first floor level.
