Description
The Paddock is a detached cottage, likely built around 1702, with a dated beam in the main section and later enlarged to the north in the 18th century. It is constructed of rubble stone and features a stone slate roof with a small renewed central stone ridge stack. The cottage is a single range, single storey with an attic, and has four small gables on the west side. Each gable contains paired six-pane casements with timber lintels in flush stone surrounds, except for the third bay from the left. The first bay, which is the added bay and slightly projects, has flush quoins as a surround on the first floor, while the ground floor window is a paired casement with a timber lintel. The rest of the ground floor includes an original three-light casement in a flush stone surround to the far right, and renewed two and three-light windows with concrete lintels in the second and third bays, with the third bay likely having been the original doorway. A 20th-century door with a flat wooden hood on curved struts has been inserted to the left of the second bay. Originally, there was probably a large right end stack that has been completely removed, although the outer curved wall of the newel stair remains at the rear. The central stack has a large timber bressumer fireplace at its base. The large main room on the ground floor to the south features the beam from 1702, which is said to have once served as a galleried schoolroom.
