Description

SP 0602-0702 AMPNEY CRUCIS AMPNEY CRUCIS VILLAGE (east side)

11/31 The Paddock

II

Detached cottage. Probably c1702, dated beam in main section, enlarged to north later in C18. Rubble stone, stone slate roof, one small renewed central stone ridge stack. Single range, single storey and attic. Four small gables to west, each with paired 6- pane casements and timber lintel in flush stone surrounds except for bay 3 from left. Bay 1 (the added bay, slightly projecting) has flush quoins as surround on first floor, and ground floor window is paired casement with timber lintel. Rest of ground floor has original 3-light casement in flush stone surround to far right, renewed 2 and 3-light with concrete lintels in bays 2 and 3, bay 3 having probably been the original doorway. C20 door with flat wooden hood on curved struts inserted to left of bay 2. Probably a large right end stack originally, now completely removed but with outer curved wall of newel stair still in situ at rear. Central stack has large timber bressumer fireplace at base. Large main room to south on ground floor with beam of 1702 said to have been a galleried schoolroom at one time.
