Description
This large barn, located to the west of Drew's Farmhouse in Leighterton, dates back to 1800, as indicated by the datestone R + B/1800. It is constructed of random rubble limestone with dressed quoins and features a stone slate roof. The barn has seven bays and a central projecting porch on each side.
On the west side, there is a central gabled porch with a timber lintel above the doorway, which has a relieving arch and plank barn doors. Above the doorway is a louvred loft opening, and there is a square lantern for the columbarium topped with a stone pigeon finial, while the barn gables have ball finials. Lean-tos with corrugated-iron roofs are present on both sides of the porch; the left one has been cut down from a higher pitch and has rounded corners. The main ridge features a row of gablet vents.
The east side also has a central gabled porch with a datestone. The north gable end is plain, except for ten rows of pigeon holes with perches, while the south gable end is roughcast rendered with a single apex pigeon hole.
Inside, the barn has a seven-bay collar truss roof with lath and plaster between the trusses and plastered walls. There are signs of two inserted floors at the south end, which have since been removed. Each porch has a loft, with the west porch serving as a columbarium. This barn is part of a group that includes Drew's Farmhouse and another barn and stables.
