Description

Meads House is a large detached house, originally a rectory, dating to the 17th century, with significant enlargement in the early to mid-18th century, followed by alterations in the early 19th century and the 20th century. The exterior is roughcast render, with rubble chimneys and a stone slate roof. The main two-storey block has an attic and cellars, and is fronted by a six-window facade. This includes a central two-storey canted bay window with a crenellated parapet and 12-pane sashes to the front and sides. Other windows are 12-pane sashes, with some featuring thick glazing bars. Three hipped attic dormers with 19th-century sashes are present. The south-facing gable has a central projecting chimney stack with a moulded cap and two ground-floor sashes, alongside 20th-century upper-floor casements. A rear wing extends to the right with early 19th-century sash windows. A 20th-century glazed sun room is not of special interest. The north side has a blank gable end and a wing to the left with scattered 20th-century casements. The east side was altered in the 20th century when some 19th-century service accommodation was demolished, and now includes a central two-storey round-ended stair wing with a pedimented doorway and a round-arched stair window above, all in 20th-century style. Rear wings project to the right and left. Inside, there is a spiral staircase in the north wing, and a panelled room with a bay window on the ground floor, likely dating to the early 19th century. A plain but substantial boundary wall runs along The Meads and continues along The Street, broken by a gate with ashlar gatepiers.
