Description

SWELL LOWER SWELL SP 12 NE 3/156 Stable Block 20 yards NE of Bowl Farmhouse - GV II

Stables. C17, remodelled mid C19. Rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings. Hipped imitation Cotswold stone roof with 3 small gabled ventilators. Single- storey with continuous drip over lintels. Roughly 8 or 9 bays, irregular. 4 cross mullion windows; roughly central carriageway with elliptical head; 2 square headed doorways, to left of centre with 2 light transom and to left with side-lights, wooden lintel and 4-light transom. Large entry to right with concrete lintel. Gabled loft entry to rear and a walled-in C17 chamfered wooden lintel. Clearly the stables of the Gloucestershire historian Sir Robert Atkyns's lost manor house.
